Self-worth is something that society highly encourages because of the many wonders it does to a person’s mental health, performance in work or school, and overall well-being. However, it’s not always easy to enhance one’s self-esteem because many factors can easily affect or fluctuate emotions and mindsets.
Learning how to improve your self-esteem is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. While it may be difficult, it’s not impossible. Here’s how you can do it:
Get Used To Positive Affirmations
Most of the time, positive affirmations are a great way to jumpstart a mindset and self-esteem that’s confident, full of hope, and positivity. However, it doesn’t always work for everyone. People who have low self-esteem tell themselves, “I’m a successful person!” only makes them feel worse, especially if it’s contrary to their current situation.
The best way to help anyone (whatever level of self-esteem they have), is to have believable affirmations. Here are some examples:
- “I can slowly but surely work my way and succeed in my field!”
- “Slow progress is still progress.”
- “I will reach my dreams one step at a time!”
- “I can do it at my own pace and time.”
If You’re Good At Something, Develop It More
Most of the time, people end up feeling bad about themselves because they see others thriving or excelling in a specific field or activity. But the truth is, these individuals discovered what they’re good at, and further developed their skills! For example, you’ve received compliments when you started baking different pastries or can quickly learn an instrument without trying too hard. Focus on these traits and further hone your skills to help improve your self worth along the way.
Don’t Forget To Acknowledge Failure And Shortcomings.
While it’s healthy always to think positive thoughts, you should also learn how to balance them with acceptance of failure and mistakes. Continuous positive thinking can become a toxic mindset, especially for individuals who cannot control themselves. It’s always best to keep yourself grounded by accepting your flaws and mistakes without beating yourself up.
Avoid Criticizing Yourself
Criticisms can be a way for you to reflect on different things. However, it’s not healthy if you continuously criticize yourself for the things you cannot do. Unfortunately, you are your worst critic, and it won’t help when you always put yourself down. Make it a habit to stop entertaining the inner voice that keeps telling you that you’re not good enough.
List Down Things You’re Grateful For In Life
When you start becoming grateful for the little things in life, you also begin to have an appreciation of everything around you. This mindset helps you improve your self-esteem because you become happy and content with the progress that you make, big or small. For example, you were only able to bake cupcakes instead of the cake that you wanted. Being grateful makes you feel appreciated and successful in your little way.
Join Clubs/ Groups That Empower Positivity
While everything should start with yourself, it also helps others push you to become more grateful and have a better mindset. If you want to maintain a positive outlook and mindset, you can look for organizations or clubs that empower positivity differently and successfully. It could be through fieldwork, charities, and many more. The more that you feel good about what you do, the more that you start changing your mindset and stop focusing on your failures or mistakes.
Spend Time With People Who Appreciate You
Appreciative peers are always one of the main reasons people stop feeling bad about themselves. If you failed a math test, and one friend tells you how thankful they are because you’re a good friend to them, the feeling of sadness and regret instantly goes away. When you surround yourself with grateful individuals, everything else becomes lighter and more bearable.
Improving your self-esteem can be one of the most challenging things to do, especially if you’re not used to it. But it would be best if you also remembered that changing your mindset is not impossible. All it takes is the willingness to improve and ask help from a few people along the way. Investing time for the betterment of your self-esteem will reap results and outcomes that will 100% help you in the long run.
