For black people living in the US, life can be complicated. The Black community consistently endures the trauma of institutional and personal racism that date back to generations. Because of the constant turmoil, they also need to reduce the body’s stress response through activities, including yoga practice and mindful meditation.
For some, however, it may not be enough. Hopefully, the resources below will help the Black community find the treatment that they need.
Association of Black Psychologists Self-Care Tool Kit
You will find this tool kit with 26 pages written in either Spanish or English. It comprises valuable information about the effects of trauma and stress on the human mind and body. It offers strategies for self-care in handling the results of racism. Developed for and by African lineage people, the tool kit provides inspiration and comfort in these perilous times.
It helps by giving away resources to assist in caring for each other in the Black community, while also strengthening their bond as they prepare for what lies ahead. Despite the current crisis, it also serves as an opening for a promising opportunity. While the community goes through a lot every day, the current events are only recent in an assault that has been ongoing dating more than 400 years back.
The association believes that the lies spread are the main reasons why many people devalue black lives and all the difficulties they face as a community. To strike with all their strength by working hand in hand is their goal to free themselves from oppression.
Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective (BEAM)
Therapists, advocates, religious leaders, artists, psychologists, activists, and those who commit to healing Black communities through their mental and emotional health are what make up the nonprofit collective. The website BEAM provides details on emotional regulation, events and training, resources promoting wellness, information on finding a therapist with cultural competence, and coping skills.
BEAM encourages various approaches with the significant effects in strategies for emotional health. Practices include yoga, dance, religious and spiritual practices, creative arts, psychotherapy, medication, and a lot more. You must have experience in several methods to transform the landscape of your emotional health.
Black Mental Health Alliance (BMHA)
The Black Mental Health Alliance is a nonprofit organization in Baltimore. It connects those in the Black community that needs a culturally competent therapist with licenses as mental health professionals through a referral service with strict policies in confidentiality. The BMHA is a membership organization based on the community with a rich background of direct service provision.
It includes youth tobacco prevention and education, mental health services based on schools, summer camp, fatherhood initiatives, AIDS/HIV prevention, and after-school programs. The Alliance has training that incorporates race-based and historical trauma, cultural competence, structural racism, health’s social determinants, and mental health stigma in the Black community.
Black Women’s Health Imperative
Black women founded the organization to aid in the protection and advancement of wellness and health in both Black women and girls. It is the first nonprofit organization to do so. Their website also contains useful material about physical fitness along with a quiz that determines your level of stress. They aim to reduce several health problems that Black women often experience in their lives.
Black Women’s Health Imperative has always maintained its forefront of health issues by providing initiatives that aim to promote the overall wellness of women in the Black community.
Therapy for Black Girls
Therapy for Black Girls offers resources for well-being and mental health that composes of a podcast, support community based on membership, and mental health professionals with cultural competence. Frequently, the stigma that surrounds therapy and issues in mental health prevents Black women from getting the help they need from a therapist.
The Black community created the space to discuss mental health topics with more relevance and accessibility.
The Safe Place App
A black woman named Jasmin Pierre survived an attempt at suicide and later developed the Safe Place App. She purposely designed it to reach users in the Black community with data about self-care tips and mental health resources. It is free to download in both Google Play and the Apple Store.
The app is psychoeducational and intends to provide information on various mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder, anxiety, postpartum depression, and more. The app also has a feature that allows the user to join a discussion forum, taking them to a Facebook page where the forum occurs.
Nurturing mental health, especially at times like these, may seem like a strenuous task for several reasons, such as how the Black community consistently faces barriers. Discrimination in the healthcare field and dealing with culturally incompetent therapists can prevent them from receiving the appropriate treatment for mental health.
However, the resources mentioned above can help with the stigma and raise awareness for people of all colors. It gives a chance for the Black community to seek the treatments that they deserve finally.
